As the 
defending World Champions, the Arizona Diamondbacks opened the 2002 season with minimal changes to their roster and line-up. On paper it looked as though the 2002 team could repeat their domination on the way to a second World Championship.
On April 1, 2002 the Diamondbacks would host the San Diego Padres at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix AZ.
For the fourth straight year left-handed pitcher Randy Johnson would take the mound for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Opening Day line-up featured two different players from the previous season. Junior Spivey would take over at second base while Craig Counsell would take over third base for an injured Matt Williams.
For the third time in franchise history the Diamondbacks won their season opener. The final score Diamondbacks 2 - Padres 0 in front of 47,025.
