the year was a complete disaster for the Diamondbacks losing a franchise worst 111-games. As a result the Diamondbacks fired their manager replacing him with Bob Melvin.
On April 4, 2005 the Diamondbacks would host the Chicago Cubs at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix AZ.
For only the third time in franchise history there was a new pitcher for Opening Day. Right-handed pitcher Javier Vazquex would take the mound for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Opening Day line-up featured seven different players from the previous season.
Craig Counsell was back playing second base. Royce Clayton took over at shortstop. Newly signed Troy Glaus was now playing third base. Former Dodger Shawn Green was now playing right field. Jose Cruz Jr. was now in centerfield. Chad Tracy was now at first base and the catching duties were taken over by Koyie Hill.
For the fifth time in franchise history the Diamondbacks lost their season opener. The final score Diamondbacks 6 - Cubs 16 in front of 45,539.
