Always adept at setting records in his Major League career, Randy Johnson added something just a little extra to his impressive resume when he set down all 27 Atlanta Braves he faced on May 18, 2004, in Turner Field. At 40 years, 251 days, Randy became the oldest pitcher in baseball history to record a perfect game, overtaking Cy Young, who was 37 years, 37 days on May 5, 1904. Johnson’s amazing feat was the 15th in modern day regular season history, the 16th if you include Don Larsen’s perfect game for the Yankees in the 1956 World Series.
Johnson struck out13 in the 117-pitch performance which ended with a 98-mph pitch to Eddie Perez to finish the game. It was the first no-hitter in Diamondbacks franchise history and the first perfect game in the Major Leaguess since David Cone tossed one on July 18, 1999, in Yankee Stadium against Montreal. It was the first perfect game in the National League since Montreal’s Dennis Martinez retired all 27 Dodgers he faced on July 28, 1991, in Chavez Ravine.
